Smart gadget security: The new laws designed to keep you safe in your home

The rise of smart devices and the Internet of Things (IoT) in most UK homes has undoubtedly made our lives more convenient and connected. However, it’s crucial to recognise that these devices also pose a significant security risk. Any device that can connect to the internet is potentially vulnerable to hacking, which could have serious implications.

Given the number of devices, from smartphones and laptops to game consoles, TVs and smart appliances now in many homes, this risk is a growing concern. But new laws for smart gadget manufacturers designed to help keep people safe in their homes are now in force.

Here, the team at Stonewall Security dig a little deeper.

What are the new smart gadget laws?

As part of the Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (PSTI) regime, manufacturers wanting to sell smart gadgets must comply with new legal requirements.

The introduction of these new laws is a proactive step by the government to address the escalating security risks associated with internet-connected devices. The aim is to empower consumers to safeguard their data. The government is optimistic that these new laws will provide consumers with a sense of security.

What are the new smart gadget rules?

When it comes to smart gadgets such as voice assistants, TVs or phones, there have always been security guidelines that manufacturers have been expected to follow. However, the new laws under the Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure regime have set our three new requirements. These are:

  • Manufacturers must make their password procedures more secure. This includes ensuring that any set by manufacturer passwords are not left blank or do not use easy-to-guess choices such as ‘12345’, ‘password’ or ‘admin’.
  • They must also clarify to consumers how they can report bugs or security problems that arise.
  • Manufacturers and retailers should inform customers how long they will receive support, including software updates, for the device they are buying.

These new laws and requirements are now in place. Any manufacturer that fails to comply with these new rules could face heavy fines and penalties.

What does this mean for consumers?

The government said the laws were a “world first” that would protect UK consumers and businesses and boost the country’s resilience against cybercrime. The Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure regime aims to give consumers greater peace of mind that their smart devices are protected from cybercriminals.

The UK’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology welcomes the new laws and said it was part of the British government’s GBP 2.6-billion National Cyber Strategy to protect and promote Britain online.
